Architect's statement

The UTS Thomas Street building is a purpose-built facility connected to the existing science building at the University of Technology Sydney’s Broadway campus. The building is a key element of the University’s $1B City Campus 2020 Masterplan, also developed by BVN, and was the winning competition design.

The Thomas Street building creates an environment that is conducive to academic pursuit and excellence whilst contributing to the social infrastructure of campus. Housing the UTS Faculty of Science, which comprises the graduate school of health, school of environment, chemistry and maths, it provides specialist facilities for science teaching and research, including wet and dry labs, as well as general teaching spaces. Clean rooms, nanoscience laboratories, open rooftops for environmental research, consulting rooms, MRI and CT scanner, and a 210 seat undergraduate ‘super-lab’ are some of the facilities. Social spaces include a new café at ground level as well as breakout and meeting rooms, and pedestrian connections to Thomas Street and the new Alumni Green. The building is five storeys above ground and three stories below ground with a roof garden providing open space for informal teaching, research and collaboration.

The undulating façade takes inspiration from organic tree formations. Its soft and fluid form provides a distinctive backdrop to Alumni Green.
